Day 11 - Home Sweet Home Burrito. Left overs in my own fridge - bulgogi and unagi - asian sensation in a mexican tortilla. I feel safe again, now that I’m back in SF - land of available tortillas!
Burrito number 19! Cafe Gratitude: Sushi with sprouted almond-sesame seed pâté, carrots, avocado and sprouts wrapped in nori. Served with wasabi and wheat-free tamari. Wrapped in a flour tortilla.
This was really similar to sushirrito and was essentially vegetable sushi wrapped in a burrito-like nori. I also brought a tortilla wrap to put it in! This is becoming my favorite lunch place around my work!

Day 11. A very mid-western burrito today. I just had some coffee for breakfast since I was running really late. and by the time I got to the deli around lunch time I was STARVING. So I asked the deli worker to turn one of the hot paninis into a wrap. and got myself a qualifying burrito with Chicken and Broccoli Rabe. As i did the day before, I incorporated a (less brothy, more chunky) soup into the burrito - this time, cream of broccoli. It was very messy and afterwards I had broccoli stuck in my teeth. Not fabulous.
Day 10. The Most Disastrous Burrito experiment so far.
After having perfected the soup burrito on Wednesday and during lunch, I became extremely cocky and decided to order the soup du jour at the hotel and finish up the burrito that’s left over from lunch. Unfortunately though. Soup du jour is a clear cabbage soup. fuck my life. I tried my best to do the scoopy thing. i even tried to strain the soup into a glass to see if i can just drink the clear broth as a beverage. No go. This soup just didn’t work as part of a burrito. I’m sure hotel catering thought that I was nuts for ordering and returning a bowl of soup.
I ended up buying a chocotaco and turning it into a chocotaco burrito. Thankfully that was quite delicious!
Last night Christopher and I had a poke burrito, and it was alright. No more words.
Burrito number 17! Cafe Gratitude: black beans, Mexican slaw, and a tamale wrapped in a flour tortilla.
Inspired by my compatriots of the burrito challenge in their tamale eating ways and currently on a grease detox, I decided to get a tamale burrito at Cafe Gratitude for lunch today! The thing about Cafe Gratitude is that they’re very zen, appreciative, and happy. My meal was called “I am trusting,” or something. My burrito, on the other hand, was really drippy.
Day 10. The coworker at Detroit asked me if I wanted to come to lunch. No. not really. But i don’t want to seem weird and anti-social. So I said yes. We went to a fancy ass grocery store and they had this ridiculously well-stocked deli - which served wraps in a tortilla. They also had delicious looking tomato basil soup. So I got both, having figured out how to incorporate soup into a burrito.
Back at the office I found a deserted conference room (called “8 Mile” - am I in Detroit? I can’t tell!) and carefully savored my soup burrito. It was messy. It was slurpy. but I managed to snap a couple of photos for you guys.
Here it is, in all of its drippy glory - praise me.
Day 10 Burrito #40294*: Eggs, Bacon, and Hashbrowns with catsup.
I’m not that hungry, but I need to go to an agency meeting this morning, and I want to have some protein and coffee before the presentation - my flair for storytelling is always enhanced after some food. One problem, the hotel doesn’t have a breakfast burrito, and I didn’t get a chance to bring any spares. I poured over the menu - and sure enough, they have what is called a “California Wrap” - an all vegetarian wrap with sprouts, which btw wonderfully summarizes how the Mid-West perception of californian cuisine. How flattering. If they only knew…
Anyway, where there’s a wrap, there’s unleavened flour tortillas. So I marked on the breakfast card last night that I wanted a flour tortilla instead of bread. Then it’s just a matter of waiting to see if catering comes through for me…
…and they did! I blissfully wrapped up a mid-western breakfast plate (eggs, bacon, hashbrowns). and after two bites, I couldn’t go on anymore. The food is tasty, it’s just that I’m really not that hungry. But the two bites that I did have were part of a burrito!!!!
* maybe it’s not that burrito # but honestly that’s like the number I feel i’m eating.
Day 9 Asparagus soup Burrito
so… I have a 3 day biz trip to Detroit Michigan, and upon arriving at SFO, I realized that I TOTALLY forgot to bring tortillas with me on this stupid business trip to Detroit! ugh. Still full from the dinner from the night before, I wasn’t that hungry at 7:30 in the morning. but I figured I’ll buy a couple of breakfast burritos, in case Detroit doesn’t have them….
I ended up toting the two breakfast burritos all the way to Detroit. I got into my Hotel around 7 pm local time. I wouldn’t say I’m super hungry, but what I really wanted was some soup. I figured that this basically means I’ll have to figure out a way to eat a soup burrito.
What transpired isn’t photographed, since it required swift execution. But I will try to do this again tonight and showcase exactly what I did.
My original thought was to use the soup as a dip. Which given the amount of mole involved in the burrito challenge so far, should suffice for the technical requirement of the challenge. But as I was dipping I realized that it’s not quite satisfying enough, so what I ended up doing is to scoop out a little bit of the burrito content, and then using that indention as a spoon substitute - that way, the soup is wholly incorporated into the burrito, and I still get to enjoy the “slurpy” part of the soup. Actually, the added moisture to the burrito made the whole experience a LOT more sensible as well. Yes, the wine helped.
I don’t recommend doing this when there’s other people around. It was a very messy endeavor. But finally, i got to have some soup.
